Over the next week and half, leading up tot he winter break, we will looking at colonizing a celestial body in our solar system. This will be accentuated by a quiz this coming Friday and next Friday as well. Notes and information that are embedded into our project are attached to this post as a reference as we study and complete our project. There is an additional topic about the solar system that is not attached (the solar system) but is included in the project and will be posted in whole unit notes soon. This information will be for NEXT WEEK. The information for the quiz this week is in topics 4 and 5 notes that we have already taken and are posted in previous blog posts.
As we move into the final month before the winter break, we will be finalizing our space exploration and surface area units while also starting our scale and transformations unit in math. On Thursday, December 6, we will have our math test for Surface Area. Next week, we will start a project for space exploration and will also be having a topics 4 and 5 quiz for space exploration on Tuesday, December 11. The powerpoint notes for topics 4 and 5 can be found below.
In the coming weeks, we will be looking to work on a colonization of the solar system project. As we move towards this, we will look at how we measure and study the breadth and depth of space. Based on the information taken so far and covered on Monday - Thursday this week, we will have a quiz on Friday, November 30. In math, we will look at deconstructing composite shapes by looking at rectangles, triangles, and cylinders separately and then as composite shapes. We will have a composite shapes test in the first week of December. Our tentative timeline is below. Additionally, the workbook for our current math unit and the textbook chapter are posted as well as some of the tentative assignments for the week. We will be looking at the multiple choice format on assignments this week so that we can discuss the types of problems and some tips to answer them best. For the math questions listed in the textbook and workbook, we will not be covering them in class necessarily so, if you would like to do 1-2 questions extra per day, there are suggested questions. As we prepare today:
In math class this week we are looking at surface area and volume. To recall and establish themes, we have looked at creating expressions utilizing patterns in base 10 blocks and are now looking at the overarching question of "How much does it cost to build a backyard rink?" Below are the images of Mr. Gordon's backyard/rink as it is constructed. As a class, we unpacked all of the information needed to calculate the cost. This included questions about the materials, the supports, water cost in Calgary and much more. Below is a summary of the key information that was uncovered. Using the provided information and with our groups, we arrived at the following questions that need to be answered. We will be working on them with the overall cost as our background focus over the next few classes. As we work on and finish the project, there is extra questions to complete below. We will start with Topic 3, Right angle prisms.
To Start our space exploration unit, we will look at the merits and detriments of space travel. Math HomeworkFor Tuesday, November 6th, each student is responsible to answer question 3 and 15 from the attached questions. Additionally, all students are to choose one more question from 16-29 to answer.
As we prepare for our first major science test of the year, our classes will be going through sample PAT questions and how to answer them. These type of questions tend to be heavy in source analysis (reading graphs, tables, or scenarios) and then discerning key information. For the environmental chemistry unit, there are sample problems below to help with revision. Additionally, we will be going through tables and diagram analysis in RTI after lunch this week. There are sample diagrams and tables in the presentation below for students to access as they aim to interpret data and increase their knowledge in this skill based area.
