To Finish off Last week and to start this one, we have been working on Predator/ Prey Dynamics, Food webs, graphing, pesticide use, and bioaccumulation through a game scenario. Attached is the surviving the wild game which is due Wednesday, September 26. We have worked on it for parts of three periods so it is hopefully not homework but if so, please remember to bring it in on Wednesday.
As a grade, we have also looked at Graph analysis over the past week. For each graph this year we are asking students to TASTE it (Not in a weird way!). This means that when they receive any graph they should be looking at the Title, Axes, Scale, Trends, and then Explaining or interpreting the results of the graph. A good presentation can be found HERE.
As we head into the weekend, our classes have done a lab on Nutrient Testing to identify how to find out if a substance contains starch (iodine test), glucose (Benedict's Solution Test), lipids (Light Emission Test), or protein (Biuret Test). Following this we are looking at nutrition and a balanced diet through a predation game. Next week we will analyze the results and talk about the application of graphing, bioaccumulation, Lethal Dose, and pesticide use. Mobile Escape is here... was here... will be here! This week we had the Mobile Escape Group come and talk our students through the set up of building a mobile escape room. During our After Lunch RTI block next week, students will work on creating clues, props, and building an escape room so that when the Team comes back, we can build and present our own escape room on October 4! A Little Bit of MathThis week in Math we are continuing to work on operations with Rational Numbers. This includes fractions, decimals, positives, and negatives. We will be looking at the order of operations towards the end of the week. The assignment from Friday, September 14 was due on Monday September 17. Science and the EnvironmentWe have started our Environmental Chemistry Unit by analyzing a variety of substances for Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Lipids. We will be looking at balanced nutrition and diet throughout this week.
On Friday we will be working in stations to answer questions and improve our addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. The stations are listed below and include the questions. If you do not complete the questions during class time on Friday, the tasks are assigned as homework. Continue today’s math hook by exploring the results of dividing 2/7, 3/7, 4/7, 5/7, 6/7, 7/7, 8/7, 9/7. What patterns do you see? Remember to show your work for long division. I am very excited to get this school year started. Some of you may know me from last year as this is my second year at NCS. We are going to have an exciting school year coming with a multitude of field trips, interactive activities, residencies, and more!
