Mr. Gordon's &
Ms. Sritrakul's Blog
We had a great farewell turnout tonight! I'm sure students are looking forward to Camp Horizon this Monday!
Inequalities Equations Unit Review
9E are writing their inequalities unit test tomorrow and 9A will write the test on Tuesday. We started the unit last week and this is a VERY short unit. The review package was handed out to 9E on Wednesday and will hand out to 9A tomorrow. Inequalities equations unit is Section 6.3-6.5 on the MMS9 textbook. We already covered Section 6.1-6.2 in Term 1.
Science Lab: Wet Cells
9A SAITCity Field Trip
Students completed two hands-on career investigation activities of their choice. We also got a chance to explore the SAIT campus at the end of the day!
Last week we started the Electricity unit in Science. So far we covered static and current electricity. There are practice questions at the end of each section handout.
Circle Geometry Unit Review
We have the second half of Section 8.3 left to go over in Circle Geometry unit. Unit review and extra practice worksheets were given out in class today. The unit test is next Monday. Answer keys are posted on the board at the front of the class.
We just started the circle geometry unit in Math and this unit is relatively short (only 3 sections). Students are having a quiz on Section 8.1 and 8.2 next Wednesday.
Retest in Math and Science
I've been telling both 9A and 9E since the beginning of February but it seem like not a lot of parents know about this...
If students aren't happy with their math or science unit tests mark, they are welcome to do a retest. To quality for a retest, students need to show me their completed work throughout the unit then we can set a date to do the retest outside of instructional time.
Water Quality Lab
Students were testing 6 unknown water samples using the nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity tests. Each student was responsible for a test and we combined everyone's test data to complete the observation table on the lab handout. If you weren't here on Thursday when we did the lab, please make sure to grab the completed observation table from students who did the lab.
The Inconvenient Truth documentary got pushed back due to the water quality lab.
The Surface Area unit is very short. We have 1-2 examples to go through in class on Section 1.4 and the Tin Man project left. Mini quiz on Section 1.1 and 1.2 is on Monday. The unit test is on Wednesday, April 18th.
Tin Man Project
We started this project today and will continue to work on it in class on Monday/Tuesday. If you haven't bring materials for your tin man, please bring it on Monday! Foil, and a Styrofoam head will be provided.
Students wrote the Polynomials unit test and got their tests back before the break. We are starting the Surface Area unit. So far, we reviewed surface area of a cube, a rectangular prism, a triangular prism, and a cylinder. We revisited Section 1.1 Perfect Squares that was a part of the Polynomials unit. Practice questions will come from the textbook as well as worksheets.
Later this week, we will be starting the "Tin Man" project. I will explain the project in class and hand out the project outline, rubric, and reflection. Please start bringing in recyclables such as cardboard boxes to construct your tin man.
MMS 9 Unit 1: Surface Area
Environmental Research Project
Students started the environmental research project on Tuesday before the break and we are half way through the group presentations. Last week, students continued to work on their group research project and half of the class (9A and 9E) presented at the end week.
For students who are presenting on Monday, make sure you complete your peer evaluation form ( if you're in a group of 2 or 3) and have your presentation ready to go. And don't forget to email or share your presentation with me.
PPM and Vanier River Worksheets
We went over these two worksheets that I handed out before the spring break. Students that were away on the BGS field trip, make sure to grab the answers from your peer or come and see me in class.
The Lorax Business Letter
Please make sure you hand in your business letter that was due on Friday (9A). 9E will get time to work on the business letter after the research presentations on Monday. 9E wil hand in the assignment to Ms.Ng.
Where are we at?
In Environmental Chemistry, we have Topic 6: Monitoring Air Quality to cover. This week we will be investigating air quality in Calgary and watch "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary.
Students are allow to use their own polynomials booklet that they made in class last week on the unit test.
Humans and plants composition table from the handout today.
Nitrogen Cycle Diagram
Environmental Chemistry Textbook
We will go over the Exponent unit test on Wednesday. Quiz 5.1-5.4 next Tuesday March 6th. The quiz will cover modeling, simplifying, adding, and subtracting polynomials.
Chemical reactions lab write up or the alternate safety essay was due today for 9E. 9A Conservation of mass lab write up was due today.
A quick quiz on naming ionic and molecular compounds is this Wednesday. We went over what will be on the quiz in class today.
Matter and Chemical Change unit test is on Friday March 2nd. It will cover Topic 1-8 from the textbook (see the previous post for the pdf version). In addition, balancing synthesis chemical equation will be on the test. All multiple choice and numerical response format. Students got their review materials today in class (a concept map, unit review booklet, practice test, and a subatomic particles worksheet). See attachments for the pdf version.
We just started the polynomials unit. We covered modeling using algebra tiles and simplifying polynomials. Next week we will be looking at adding and subtracting polynomials.
Practice questions are assigned from the textbook. See below for Unit 5: Polynomials pdf version.
We looked at balancing synthesis chemical equations. Students will have a quick quiz on reaction rate and a lab tomorrow. We will be doing a conservation of mass lab next week and start to wrap up the unit.
